«گرگور سامسا یک روز از خواب بیدار شد و دید که در رختخوابش به حشره ای مهیب تبدیل شده است.» کافکا با این جمله ی تکان دهنده، عجیب و حتی شاید طنزآمیز، شاهکار خود را آغاز می کند. این رمان جاودان به داستان زندگی مردی جوان می پردازد که یک شبه به حشره ای بزرگ و سوسک مانند تغییر شکل می دهد و در چشم خانواده اش، به مایه ی ننگ و نفرت تبدیل می شود. او اکنون در اتاق خود نیز احساس بیگانگی می کند و مجبور است جهانی بی رحم و ناآشنا را صرفا تحمل کند. کتاب مسخ که تأملی دلهره آور (و به شکلی پوچ گرایانه طنزآمیز) از احساساتی انسانی نظیر بیگانگی، انزوا و احساس گناه است، بدون تردید در زمره ی برجسته ترین و به یاد ماندنی ترین آثار داستانی سده ی بیستم قرار می گیرد.
